Why Domain Transfers Must Be Initiated During the Domain’s Valid Period

When transferring a domain, the transfer must be initiated while the domain is still within its valid registration period (i.e., it must not be expired). Here’s why:

1. Registry Requirements: Domain registries have policies that mandate a domain must be active (not expired) to process a transfer. This rule ensures the transfer process remains secure and verifies that the current registrant is actively managing the domain.

2. Avoid Downtime and Penalties: Expired domains may become inactive or fall into a “grace period” where they are temporarily unavailable. Transferring during the valid period prevents this downtime and avoids any additional penalties or redemption fees required to recover an expired domain.

3. Renewal and Extension Benefits: When you transfer a domain within its active period, most registrars add an extra year to your domain registration. This extra year is not guaranteed if the transfer is attempted after expiration.

4. Simplifies Ownership Validation: Many registrars require email verification during the transfer, which is easier to manage when the domain is active and not in a grace or redemption status.
