Why Does Outlook Show
“503 Valid RCPT Command Must Precede DATA”
When Replying?
This error usually means the mail server did not accept a valid recipient before Outlook tried to send the email content.
If a new email works but Reply fails, delete the recipient from the To field and type the email address manually.
The SMTP server expected a valid RCPT TO command before the DATA command. The recipient address was missing, rejected, or incorrectly formatted.
Check the Recipient Address
The Reply message may contain an invalid recipient format copied from the original email.
Check the To field before sending, especially when replying to an external sender.
- Remove the recipient from the To field.
- Type the full email address manually.
- Do not copy the display name.
- Send the email again.
Look for Invalid Characters
The address may contain quotation marks, apostrophes, extra spaces, brackets, or an incomplete display name.
Use only the clean email address when testing.
[email protected]Test with a New Email
Replying may preserve a malformed From or Reply To header from the original message.
Compare the result of Reply with a newly composed email.
- Click New Email.
- Enter the recipient manually.
- Use the same subject and message.
- Send the email.
If the new email works, the issue is probably related to the original message header or saved recipient entry.
Clear the Outlook Address Suggestion
Outlook AutoComplete may keep an old or malformed recipient entry.
Select the verified address from your address book instead of an unknown suggestion.
- Remove the suggested address from the To field.
- Delete the AutoComplete suggestion when it appears.
- Type the address again.
- Save the correct address in Outlook Contacts.
Decide When Support Is Needed
The error may also be caused by a mail server, security gateway, SMTP filter, or recipient server configuration.
Record the sender, recipient, date, time, error message, and whether New Email works.
Send the test result and screenshot to iCoreHosting support for further checking.
- The error happens with a newly composed email.
- The error affects several recipients.
- All outgoing emails are affected.
- Manual entry does not solve the problem.
- The same issue happens on another device or email application.
No valid RCPT TO means the server will not accept DATA.

When Reply fails but a new email works, the most likely cause is an invalid recipient format, an Outlook AutoComplete entry, or a malformed header from the original message.
