Understanding Inode or File Usage Limits

Inodes are a fundamental aspect of how file systems manage data. Each inode stores information about a file or a directory, such as its size, ownership, permissions, and pointers to the data blocks on the disk. In simpler terms, an inode represents a file or directory in your hosting account.

What is an Inode?

An inode (index node) is a data structure used by file systems to keep information about files and directories. Each file or directory uses one inode, which includes metadata like:

  • File size
  • Ownership
  • Permissions
  • Timestamps
  • Pointers to the data blocks

Why Inode Limits are Important

Inode limits are set to ensure the stability and performance of the hosting server. Every hosting plan comes with a specified inode limit, which represents the maximum number of files and directories you can have in your account. Exceeding this limit can lead to various issues, including:

  • Inability to create new files or directories
  • Potential performance degradation
  • Increased risk of data corruption

Inode Limits for iCoreHosting Plans

Each iCoreHosting plan comes with its own inode limit to cater to different needs. Here are the inode limits for our plans:

  • Reseller Hosting Sub Accounts: 100,000 inodes/files
  • GX100GB Plan: 300,000 inodes/files
  • Biz Unlimited Plan: 500,000 inodes/files
  • Dedicated Hosting: Unlimited inodes/files

Email Inodes:

  • Emails: Each email stored in your mailbox counts as one inode.
  • Attachments: Email attachments do not count separately as additional inodes. They are part of the email itself, thus contributing to the inode usage only once per email.

Managing Your Inode Usage

If you reach your inode limit, you may experience issues with file management. Here are some steps you can take to manage your inode usage effectively:

  1. Identify and Remove Unnecessary Files:

    • Delete old backups, unused scripts, and outdated media files.
    • Regularly clean up temporary files and caches.
  2. Optimize Existing Files:

    • Consolidate smaller files where possible.
    • Use efficient storage formats for media files to reduce the number of files.
  3. Use File Compression:

    • Compress files that are not frequently accessed to save inode usage.

Upgrading Your Hosting Plan

If you frequently reach your inode limit, consider upgrading to a plan with a higher limit. Here are the available options:

  • GX100GB Plan: 300,000 inodes/files
  • Biz Unlimited Plan: 500,000 inodes/files
  • Dedicated Hosting: Unlimited inodes/files

Upgrading your plan provides increased inode limits, better performance, and enhanced support.
